Swansea has an established programme of automatic and continuous air quality monitoring dating back to 1994. The City & County of Swansea has declared the Hafod district of Swansea as an Air Quality Management Area. Currently, there are 5 air quality stations (two with basic meteorological data), one 30 metre meteorlogical mast, one street canynon meteorological monitoring station and one AQ500 SODAR (wind profiler)(data coming live soon) providing data to these pages. Additionaly, real-time PM10 (dust) data is available from 10 locations in Swansea - mainly around busy junctions.
This website is intended to be an online resource of near real-time air quality data and meteorological data, not only for Swansea residents but also for students and medical health professionals alike. The website has been redesigned during May 2007 and relaunched on 8th June 2007 to include further enhancements - all indended to convey the information in a more simplistic way.
An index has been created to indicate the number of days Swansea and the individual sites are within the Low/Medium/high and Very High categories - this data is available for the current year as well as previous years.
All passive nitrogen dioxide diffusion tube measurements are now available on line for both historical (indicated as gey) and current measurement sites.
A live traffic cam has been provided to monitor traffic flows within Neath Road, Hafod - please see the Hafod Opsis DOAS station information and look under the link "see monitoring station in action". You will need to install the Axis media plugin to view the live images for which Administrator rights will be needed on Windows XP etc.
The site now has Accessibility Options targeted to comply as closely as possible to the AA standard.
Current alerts:
Over the weekend of the 16th - 18th May 2008 we have experienced data transfer problems to the site. These problems have now been fixed. Please accept our apologies if the data you wished to view was absent. All data should be present on the site by approximately 11am Monday 19th may 2008
The Hafod DOAS at Neath Road Hafod is likely to experience intermittent data until the end of July 2008. As such, and to avoid any missleading information being provided, the data feed from this site has been suspended and the option to view current readings etc has been temporarily removed. An Area Renewals Project is unerway along the length of Neath Road which has resulted in the light path being blocked by scaffolding errected outside the terraced housing. This break in the dataset which started on the 3rd January 2008 is unavoidable but we are working with the contracts team to try and maintain some sort of clear light path and to start data capture again.Data caputue at the 30m meteorological mast at Cwm Level Park will commence during the week beginning Monday 29th October 2007. Please bear with us whilst we test the data feed and FTP system as some data may be absent during the testing period. A webcam has been installed on the 6m level at the 30m mast site at Cwm Level Park- live images can be viewed - please see 30m Mast Cwm level Park station infomation - see the monitoring station in action, for access to the webcam. The Axis media plugin will be reqired to view the images - you will be prompted for installation if required. Maximum consecutive viewers is 15
Please be aware that FDMS units have been installed at the Swansea AURN, Morfa and Morriston stations measuring PM10 with an additional FDMS unit at the Swansea AURN measuring PM2.5. Numeric and index banded data is now being presented on these pages - please treat the particulate index banded data with caution until the new gravimetric banding scheme is released by DEFRA.
Diffusion tube data for the current survey is now available from these pages. Shortly, additional historical survey data will be uploaded and made available.
